The Montessori School at Holy Rosary

Mission Statement

The Montessori School at Holy Rosary is dedicated to providing outstanding educational instruction by discovering and awakening children's emerging potential and carefully cultivating the development of their innate talents and abilities.  We are vitally committed to providing excellence in education to the children of Greater Cleveland through the philosophy and techniques of the Montessori method, provided in a Catholic atmosphere, enriched by the values of love, respect, and justice.  The Montessori School at Holy Rosary is established to serve all children, regardless of race or creed, and is uniquely devoted to enhancing the vitality of Holy Rosary Parish and the Little Italy community.

Our History

The Montessori School at Holy Rosary was founded by members of the Holy Rosary Parish in 1994 to serve the educational needs of the community.  The Montessori School, which opened in the fall of 1995, is a non-profit, independent school approved by the State of Ohio and operated by an autonomous community board apart from the Parish Council of Holy Rosary Church.  The school serves children of all religious faiths, personal creeds, and ethnic backgrounds, while at the same time providing an optional Catholic Montessori catechetical program on a daily basis.

Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, Cleveland
A landmark in Cleveland's Little Italy neighborhood, Holy Rosary was the second Italian parish in Cleveland. A group of local residents joined together in 1891 and petitioned the Diocese for a parish of their own. The first church for Holy Rosary was built in 1892 and served until 1908, when the current structure was built. Today, Little Italy is home to a large number of college students from neighboring Case Western Reserve University, but Holy Rosary retains its Italian heritage. The church is still an anchor to the neighborhood, and its visibility has been most notable during the annual Feast of the Assumption, when tens of thousands of Greater Clevelanders pack the Mayfield Road-Murray Hill community.

The Montessori School is housed in the former Holy Rosary School.  Holy Rosary's location offers opportunity for cultural diversity as well as access to the rich traditional elements of the Little Italy neighborhood.  The school's close proximity to the world-class museums and cultural centers in University Circle is another benefit.  (Click here for map in PDF/Adobe Acrobat format)

The Montessori School at Holy Rosary opened as a preschool for three- and four-year olds, offering the choice of a morning Montessori program (8:30 to 11:30 a.m.) or an all-day Montessori classroom (7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.).  Grade levels have been added as the first group of children progressed through the program. school has since developed into a Montessori educational program from preschool through middle school, three years to eighth grade.

Montessori classrooms are divided into multi-age groups.  The preschool encompasses children ages 3-6.  The elementary program is divided into lower (ages 6-9) and upper (ages 9-12) elementary groupings. The middle school program combines seventh and eighth grades.  Multi-age groups allow older children to be leaders and guides and younger children to be recipients of care and attention from a range of more mature children.

Purpose and Goals

The Montessori School at Holy Rosary is a non-profit 501 (C)(3) school.  The school has received a charter from the Ohio Department of Education, but operates as a private institution for children ages three to fourteen years old.  The classrooms are under the direction of teachers who are trained in colleges accredited by The Association Montessori Internationale.

The Montessori School at Holy Rosary is pleased to offer the full complement of Montessori Primary, Montessori All Day, Elementary and adolescent programs.

Outcomes for Students in a Montessori Program
A Longitudinal Study of the Experience in the Milwaukee Public Schools

"This study supports the hypothesis that Montessori education has a positive long-term impact. Additionally, it provides an affirmative answer to questions about whether Montessori students will be successful in traditional schools."

"A significant finding in this study is the association between a Montessori education and superior performance on the Math and Science scales of the ACT and WKCE. In essence, attending a Montessori program from the approximate ages of three to eleven predicts significantly higher mathematics and science standardized test scores in high school."

AMI /USA School Recognition
While the name "Montessori" may be used by any school, the educational standards, teacher training and materials may vary widely.  Dr. Montessori began Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) to insure high standards in Montessori schools.
Teachers at the Montessori School at Holy Rosary are professionals, with college degrees as well as Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) training.  AMI was founded by Maria Montessori to ensure the integrity of her philosophy.  The training is rigorous with standards set according to Dr. Montessori's design.  Each classroom must be equipped with special materials and be well maintained.  Our AMI Certificate of Recognition confirms our support of Montessori principles faithfully put into practice.

"The real preparation for education is the study of one's self."  M. Montessori
