The Montessori School at Holy Rosary

Application, Interview and Acceptance

Applications with a $35.00 (for Primary) or $50.00 (for Elementary) fee are maintained on the waiting list.  The eligible applicants are reviewed on a first come, first served basis.  Applications are accepted year-round and mid-year enrollment is possible if space becomes available.

When a child and his or her parents or legal guardians have been interviewed, an acceptance letter may be issued.  Acceptance is determined by the child's developmental readiness for the Montessori program and by the parents' or guardians' understanding of the Montessori Approach.  The parents' expectations must be consistent with the principles of Montessori and the programs that the school offers in order for the child to experience maximum success in the school.  Upon receiving the acceptance letter, the parent or guardian pays a deposit of $300.00 to ensure the space for their child is held for the upcoming semester.

The first six weeks of school are considered as a trial period for parents and the school.  If concerns about the child's ability to respond to the Montessori Environment arise, the school or family may decide to withdraw the child.  The annual tuition commitment takes effect after the trial period.

Program Hours, Classroom Placement and Transitions to Different Programs
The Montessori philosophy is based upon recognizing the unique development of the individual and the tendencies and characteristics of the human at different stages.  These stages are termed "planes of development".  The primary and elementary programs are designed to meet specific needs and abilities of the child according to these developmental milestones.  Children are usually in the primary rooms for a three-year cycle but many times this can be a four-year program.  The Montessori School at Holy Rosary does not divide children by grade level nor does it focus on terms such as "graduation" and "retention" from any one program to the next.  The parent and teacher share observations during conferences with a view to eventual transitions.  Children traditionally visit another room before changing program completely.  Transitions occur for children at any time during the school year.  Whereby the parent is a continual partner in the planning and responses to their child's development, placement of a student in any program is ultimately at the school's discretion.

Similarly, the school may require a student's hours be shortened according to their developmental readiness.  Children who are enrolled in the All Day Montessori program may not be ready to stay for the full-day hours.

Outcomes for Students in a Montessori Program
A Longitudinal Study of the Experience in the Milwaukee Public Schools

"This study supports the hypothesis that Montessori education has a positive long-term impact. Additionally, it provides an affirmative answer to questions about whether Montessori students will be successful in traditional schools."

"A significant finding in this study is the association between a Montessori education and superior performance on the Math and Science scales of the ACT and WKCE. In essence, attending a Montessori program from the approximate ages of three to eleven predicts significantly higher mathematics and science standardized test scores in high school."

The above referenced document, completed in May 2003, is a scientific study which determines the specific benefits of a Montessori education between the age of three through sixth grade.  Click on the link to read the entire document ( opens in a new window).

AMI /USA School Recognition
While the name "Montessori" may be used by any school, the educational standards, teacher training and materials may vary widely.  Dr. Montessori began Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) to insure high standards in Montessori schools.
Teachers at the Montessori School at Holy Rosary are professionals, with college degrees as well as Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) training.  AMI was founded by Maria Montessori to ensure the integrity of her philosophy.  The training is rigorous with standards set according to Dr. Montessori's design.  Each classroom must be equipped with special materials and be well maintained.  Our AMI Certificate of Recognition confirms our support of Montessori principles faithfully put into practice.

"The real preparation for education is the study of one's self."  M. Montessori
