The Montessori Preschool
Program
The
Montessori Teacher as Guide
Montessori education is based on the inner motivation of the child.
The Montessori teacher, who is a child advocate in the deepest sense,
cultivates respect for the child's total being. Montessori teachers
believe in the powers of individual children, who want to do by themselves
and act on their own. The child therefore chooses the activities and
sets the pace. The Montessori teacher, a keen observer, then follows
and guides the child. All faculty of the Montessori School at Holy
Rosary have Montessori teacher certification through the Association
Montessori Internationale.
The greatest sign of success for
a teacher is to be able to say, "The children are now working as if I
did not exist." M. Montessori
The Prepared Environment: A
Montessori Concept
A significant component of the Montessori method is the prepared
environment. The trained teacher knows the developmental needs of
children and sets up and maintains the prepared environment with an
atmosphere of calm and order, warmth, care, awareness, and
joy. Designed to invite significant discovery and exploration
appropriate to the child's age and level of development, the prepared
environment provides key experiences of the richness of the surrounding
world.
Extending out from all directions are open shelves with
bright arrays
of solid geometric forms, knobbed puzzle maps, colored beads, metal
templates, various specialized blocks and rods, etc. In one corner
are a small child's sink, a cutting board, a dish pan, and real china
dishes. Nearby stand an ironing board, a clothes rack, and a wash
basin with a scrubbing board. The room reminds the child of home and
invites activity and participation. Independence is shaped by the
clear availability and self-corrective aspects of the materials.
"To aid life, leaving it
free, however, to unfold itself, that is the basic task of the educator."
